My Sacred Nature, 2020
My Sacred Nature explores Gaia Starace’s deeply personal relationship with the natural world through colour, movement and materiality.
Across the three series Water in the Forest, Water in the Desert and Water in the Sky, Starace considers nature as a space for reflection, transformation and connection. Working primarily with oil paint, she uses a process of adding and removing, layering translucent colour before scraping and incising the surface to reveal what lies beneath. Accidental imperfections are embraced as reflections of the mutable nature of human experience. Influenced by her Italian heritage, architectural background and interest in spirituality, Starace balances vibrant colour with restrained composition.
The works move between stillness and movement, exploring the relationship between humanity and the environment while celebrating the beauty, fragility and sacredness of nature.
