Home Grown: Surface Tension brings together artists exploring ideas of visibility, memory and the intangible histories that shape us. For the exhibition, Gaia Starace presents a work inspired by the ancient amphora, a vessel traditionally used to carry goods between places. Referencing her Italian heritage, the amphora becomes a metaphor for memory, movement and cultural inheritance, carrying experiences gathered across places and passed from one generation to another.
Rather than depicting the vessel explicitly, Starace allows its form to emerge and disappear through layers of colour, texture and gesture. Never fully revealed, its boundaries and contents remain open to memory, emotion and interpretation. The work continues Starace’s broader exploration of materiality, rhythm and mark making as ways of tracing lived experience and the histories that remain present even when they cannot be fully seen.
